VW Transporter. How much insulation do I need?
Insulation is an important stage in any campervan conversion. It's a pretty simple task, needing only a Stanley type of knife, a tape measure, spray adhesive and degreaser.
Once you have stripped the vans interior panels off, it's time to degrease, try your best to clean the panel you want to insulate to aid the glues adhesion.
If you decide to go with a layer of sound deadening (such as Dodo Mat Deadn Hex), this would be the base layer and goes in first.
Sound deadening is an optional stage, the sound absorption properties offered by a high quality product like Dodo Thermo Liner are more than enough for most. The Thermo Liner absorbs sound and also insulates, this makes it a great choice for campervans. The Thermo Liner is cut to shape, then the film on the self adhesive backing is removed ready to be stuck in position. Try to get as much coverage as you can with the Thermo Liner.
Once the Thermo liner is in, we need to fill the remaining cavities with a plastic based fleece insulation. Dodo Fleece Evo is perfect for this. The Fleece will need a bit of spray glue to hold it in position.
After you have done the sidewalls, doors and ceiling. We can look at insulating the floor.
If you plan to install a 12mm plywood floor with a good non-slip flooring on top then this will already be adding a good insulating layer.
The floor isn't as crucial to insulate as the walls, we consider it optional in campervans. If you do insulate the floor Dodo Mat Deadn Duo Pro is the best choice with a 1 piece floor bonded on top of it.
It is a terrible idea to use loft insulation behind panels on your campervan, to briefly explain, loft insulation retains moisture leading to soggy walls and eventually rust. Plastic based insulation does not retain moisture.
Similarly, the use of expanding foam is not a good idea, not only does it make wiring a nightmare, the chemicals within the foam can damage paintwork, again leading to rust.
