Do I need to notify the DVLA when converting to a campervan?

DVLA campervan reclassification is no longer an option for most converted vans. The DVLA made re-registering a panel van to a poptop equipped campervan very difficult.

But fear not. It is not a legal requirement to re-register your van as a campervan.

It is important to notify the DVLA if you are altering the number of travelling seats in your van according to its V5C. So if you are adding or removing seats, your V5C needs to be updated.

Your insurance company needs notifying of any conversion or modification to your van.

If your van's V5C states 'N1 category van' it may be beneficial to reclassify it as  'M1 category, van with windows' should you meet the criteria, this may mean you pay less road tax.

The most important thing is that your insurance is informed of any conversion or modification. Most insurers do not require any V5C alterations other than the number of seats in your van.
